What is the best way to spent your Sunday afternoon with girlfriends? Afternoon Tea! If you remember last week I shared my Girls Staycation at Grand Hotel. After we checked out from Grand Hotel on Sunday, we headed to the Fairmont Royal York for Afternoon Tea. Fairmont Royal York has been serving Afternoon Tea since it opened in 1929. Afternoon tea is offered at the Library Bar just past the main lobby. Dimly-lit with dark bookcases along the walls; a beautiful contrast with the floral fine china the tea is served in. Afternoon Tea is served on Saturdays and Sundays, and Mother’s Day is the busiest time of the year, so definitely book ahead if you are planning on treating your mom. I have actually had Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont before during summer. What is amazing about having Afternoon Tea in the summer is that it includes a visit to the hotel’s rooftop herb garden and bee apiary. A must see if you ask me, and a beautiful city view.
There are ample of tea choices to choose from depending on your taste buds. Fairmont Earl Grey, Egyptian Chamomile, Kea Lani Orange Pineapple to name a few. I opted for the Oolong Sweet Watermelon, but I have also had the Berry Berry and Jasmine Butterfly which are equally just as flavourful.
First we were served an assortment of tea sandwiches. All equally delicious, but my favourite is by far the St. Mary’s Smoked Salmon on Dark Rye Bread with Fairmont Royal York Lemon Aioli & Cucumber. Also, I know many people consider the Organic Cucumber with Watercress and Cream Cheese sandwich basic, but I actually find it extremely refreshing and light.
After we were done with our traditional finger tea sandwiches, we were served our pastry tower. The bottom of the three tiers was filled with the most delicious fresh off the oven traditional scones served with Devonshire clotted cream and fresh strawberries and berry preserve. My favourite thing about the scones was how buttery and tender they were. The middle tier consisted of an assortment of pastries like Pastry Swans with Chantilly Cream, French Macaron and many more. The top tier had some delicious Pâté de Fruit. Zeba actually required a special menu and they were happy to accommodate her dietary needs which is always an amazing option to have.
We had a wonderful experience with the girls, drinking tea, eating delicious finger sandwiches and enjoying the beautiful space. If you are looking to indulge in a little afternoon treat, I definitely recommend having Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Royal York. You can also read the girls’ experiences on their website: Jennele, Mandy, Zeba,
