How to be happier. A struggle we all face daily in our lives and we don’t even know it. Living a life that is 100% a happy life certainly sounds amazing, but a happy life is a balanced life with some tears here and there. A happy life is not a utopia, and no one lives a 100% of a happy life, but there are little things you can do in your given days to improve the quality of your life for sure.

1. Feel It All

Stress, disappointment, jealousy, sadness and many more emotions are emotions you experience from time to time. Reality is though that you are always too harsh on yourself when you are experiencing these emotions. While you are crying you may stop and say  “What is wrong with me”, or “I am such a mess”. But who ever said these emotions are wrong, or that feeling these emotions makes you not “normal”. Embrace the process and fully immerse yourself in the moment. This too shall pass.

a) Accept Negative Feelings But Stay Positive

Do you expect yourself to be positive all the time? Sorry, not going to happen, but what is key is that negative feelings will come and go. Be negative, but do not forget to move forward. Embrace those negative feelings, get it out of your system, but know how to positively react to them. Think of it this way: I get major anxiety when I have to go something out of my comfort zone, or when I have job interviews, I am pretty sure the world will end. My coping mechanism has become to accept my anxiety, but to not let it consume me. I give it a couple of minutes and then I try to move forward.  As the interview progresses my anxiety will also diminish. Always tell yourself that.

b) Admit Being Unhappy

The flaw we all have is we pretend to be alright or we brush things under the rug. Sure there is a time and place for this, but don’t be afraid to admit to yourself you are unhappy. This is the only way to ensure you are happy. Don’t lie to yourself. Admit defeat and strive to find ways to be happy.

2. Simplify Your Life

Take a moment and think about your daily life. Do you feel like you are constantly being rushed? Are you stressing to fit too many things into your day? When I first moved into the city I was overcommitting myself to meetups with friends or attending events. I had to learn to say no and to evaluate what was worth my time. By reducing the number of activities in my days, I was also able to reduce my stress levels and feel less frustrated with how many different things I had to accomplish in one day. Time pressure takes a toll on you. From affecting negatively your productivity to even taking the fun out of the outings that mean the most to you.  Simplify your life and put an end to the “I am so busy” habit of yours. Be less busy.

3. Try New Things

Life can easily become a routine. Doing the same thing over and over again, as much as you love something let’s face it does have a tendency to get boring. There is always a need to do something different from time to time, to expose yourself to new experiences, and try something new which you may have not thought about doing before. Whether it is going to a new coffee shop or taking a new class, introduce new things into your daily routine to break out of your comfort zone. You will enhance your creativity, feel more motivated to be spontaneous and a little more carefree.

4. Be grateful

We have a tendency to easily forget. How many times have you stopped to think of how far you have come? Your happiness is not just about what you have, but also as to whether you are grateful for what you have. You may have everything, but still unhappy. That is because you need to take a moment and think about all of your accomplishments. The biggest barrier seems to be that we take for granted our accomplishments. Think about the things you do have and not about what you do not have. Reality is you will most likely not pause each day to say to yourself I am so grateful about this and that. You probably do not have the time, but you need to make time. What I like to do is write down at the end of each month what I am grateful for and take a few moments to reflect.

What are you grateful for?
