7 Tips for Attending Fashion Week: Newbie Edition

bijuleni-fashion week tips

Well my flaneurs, it happened. I attended Fashion Week for the first time ever a month ago and it was a learning experience. For the Fashion Week newbies, and those that want to know more about  what Fashion Week is like here are my tips and a look inside the bold and the beautiful.

1.Dress For you

If you think that Fashion Week is all about glam like you see in the dreamy, glossy pages of VOGUE, well I have news for you. It’s a mix bag of fab and blah. I dreaded what I would wear to the shows, because hellooo it’s Fashion Week, but soon I discovered no one cares. I saw track pants, I saw jeans, I saw cocktail dresses, I saw it all! Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. That will be your best look.

2.Wear a Medium Sized Purse

You want to bring a purse that will be big enough to fit your goodies, but small enough that it will not get in the way when you are moving around. Plus that last think you want is to carry a heavy purse around for 5 hours.

3. Stay Hydrated

This is a paradox. Drink water to keep yourself hydrated, but do not drink so much water that you will have to use the bathroom. Water is nowhere to be found in these premises, and also bathrooms are no where in sight. Washrooms are actually outside, and a pain to get to.

4.Photography Galore

Be prepared to have a gazillions photographers take pictures of you as you are walking to the venue. Eek, I felt so invaded I rushed inside. If someone had warned me, I would have been more mentally prepared instead of running for the door like a little schoolgirl. So embarrassing. lol. Stop. Breathe.Pose.

5.Make Friends

Truth hurts. And the truth is majority of the bloggers out there have a tendency not to say hello. Don’t be that blogger or person in general. Find the courage in you to go and say hello, even if you feel uneasy. Make friends. That is what all these events are about. There will be moments when you want to escape, but stick it out. You are not a quitter.

6.Don’t Pretend

Don’t pretend you know a designer if you don’t. A couple of designers were mentioned to me. I had no idea who they were, so I said so. If you don’t want to be caught off guard, I would recommend just reading ahead about all the designers that will be at Fashion Week. The list is endless, and sometimes your brain has other priorities. So if you don’t recall a designer, it is OK! Don’t feel ashamed, don’t feel embarrassed, don’t feel clueless. It is ok to say you don’t know someone.

7.Enjoy the Show

I
tried to take pictures while I was watching the shows-USELESS. The lightening is bad, models are walking, pictures turn blurry, just enjoy the show.
I did use Snapchat at the end of each show when all the models were walking  down the runway, but other than that I would say put your camera away.
