Dermaplaning Everything You Need To Know

Bijuleni - Dermaplaning Everything You Need To Know - What is it? Benefits of Dermaplaning, My treatment, experience and would I do it again.
I had my dermaplaning appointment at Mix Beauty Lab in Toronto last week and I am so over-flooded with information, I had to share a post about it. It was my first time at Mix Beauty Lab and  doing dermaplaning, but had heard great things about their services and their customized foundation and lipstick creations, so I decided to give it a try.

What Exactly is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning claims to immediately rejuvenate the skin and effectively  minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars while leaving your skin smooth and vibrant. Dermaplaning is an exfoliation method that helps remove dead skin and hair from your face and neck. This technique is administered by an aesthetician and although some people do it at home, I personally would not recommend you do dermaplaning on your own unless you know what you are doing. The dermaplaning tool that is used is a sterile surgical scalpel that is placed at a 45 degree angle to achieve optimum results. The scalpel gently scrapes off the dead skin cells from your skin’s top layer along with fine vellus hairs, a fancy name for peach fuzz.

Dermaplaning is one of the best methods of exfoliation because it has zero downtime, which means you don't need to go into hiding for days while your face recovers. There is no peeling of the skin, no anesthesia involved, or skin cuts. Dermaplaning is definitely a great alternative to chemical peels considering there are no side effects.

Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is safe for all skin type, especially for sensitive skin, but if you have the following skin conditions, dermaplaning is not for you.
Dermaplaning Contraindications
(Skincancer, Active cold sores, Uncontrolled diabetes, Inflamed acne)
Current inflamed acne
Open wounds
An allergy to nickel
Use of Accutane within 6 months of treatment

My Dermaplaning Treatment Experience

The process of my dermaplaning treatment was very pleasant and I am so happy with the quality of products that were also used for my facial and to soothe my skin after dermaplaning. The aesthetician cleansed my face and then used a steamer to open my pores. After my face was dry, it was time to start the dermaplaning! The aesthetician used the scalpel in gentle sweeping motions to remove my vellus hair and dead skin from forehead, cheeks, chin, above the lips, and neck so that it blends in with the rest of my face. She then used a light to capture any hairs that were missed. Then proceeded with the rest of the facial and I also loved the jade rollers that were used. The dermaplaning treatment took about 30 minutes so super quick, but left my skin looking and feeling incredible right away.

My  Dermaplaning Results

Apart from the "Holy shit what did I just do" reaction, I was so happy with the results of dermaplaning. Shaving your face is a scary thought, but I instantly felt a difference in how my skin felt and looked. The best way to describe dermaplaning is that my skin felt like a peach before and now it felt like I was touching butter. Because dermaplaning is a great exfoliating treatment, I did notice that my skincare routine also became much more enjoyable. Since the skin is freed from dead cells and your vellus hair, the absorption and penetration of products like toner, serum, moisturizer and face oil are absorbed much more efficiently and effectively. My foundation goes on much more smoother, and I did notice I use less product quantity than before.

Benefits Of  Dermaplaning I experienced and Noticed

Skin texture is smooth and face looks flawless
A significant change in skin brightness, and looking less tired
Minimized appearance of fine lines I had on my forehead
Increased skincare product absorption
Application of my foundation and concealer is smoother

What About Acne?

You know I have very sensitive skin, and I had spent years on Accutane. I was worried that my skin would react to the treatment, but I didn't have any side effects or reactions to dermaplaning. To avoid a breakout or irritating my skin, I avoided touching my skin for 2 days. The second day I did have a mini freak out because mini bumps surfaced here and there on my face that looked like Milia. Thankfully I just expelled what was inside and the next day my skin was smooth again. The key is to not touch your face if you have sensitive skin, and you will be fine.

Will my Hair Grow Back Thicker or Darker After Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning does not interact with the hair follicle itself and cannot physically alter the growth pattern of your hair. I was slightly worried that my facial hair will grow back. So far I have not seen my hair grow back darker or rougher. My mustache area grew back a few days after I got the procedure done, but it was the same thickness and colour as it was prior to the dermaplaning. My facial peach fuzz has started to resurface again enough for me to be able to feel it slightly. The hair is not darker though. The aesthetician mentioned that dermaplaning should be done every 5-6 weeks, so I speculate my hair will have fully grown by then, but all my hair is still blonde. So yay!

Would I do Dermaplaning Again?

As much as I love how amazing dermaplaning makes my skin feel, I do think your hair grows back fairly quickly, as the aesthetician said 5-6 weeks. So with the procedure being $150 each time it can get pretty pricey if you need to get it done every 5 weeks. I would definitely do dermaplaning again, and I think I will, but I would not be able to do it every 6 weeks, just being realistic with budget. My face continues to feel healthy and very glowy, so I  highly recommend the treatment.  Dermaplaning changed my whole skin regiment and my skin feels great.

Have you ever tried dermaplaning?
