Going back to the archives of time,I thought it would be super fun to escape the city and have a mini getaway weekend with my bestie (Meryem) at my old stomping grounds, Kitchener/Waterloo area. For those of you that do not know, I did my undergrad at the University of Waterloo, majoring in English Literature as well as Family Therapy. To say that I was thrilled to be back in the KW area is an understatement. I have so many lovely and not so lovely memories there. Haha let’s be honest, pulling that all nighter to finish a paper was never a good idea. Considering the fact I no longer own a house in Kitchener like I used to, the search was on as to where we would stay for our mini staycation. We looked at many hotels in the area, but they were all so generic and had that hotel-feel vibe that we were slowly giving up on our idea of having a mini escape in KW. Until the perfect hotel revealed itself to me. Where? On Instagram! It was fate. I came across The Walper Hotel on Instagram and I fell in love. The Walper Hotel is a beautiful five-storey brick building situated at the heart of downtown Kitchener.

The front lobby has also been renovated to give each guest a more defined boutique experience. Modern furnishings, bright common areas, The Walper Hotel may have been renovated, but the ambiance of the historic elegance still perseveres throughout the hotel.

The Cocktail Lounge on the second floor was beyond beautiful.A mix of modern architecture and some  Mad Men vibe made me truly feel like I was in a different era.The Crystal Ballroom situated down the hall from the lounge still has the original maple hardwood flooring that Louis Armstrong walked across. I read somewhere that Eleanor Roosevelt also stayed at The Walper, and you know how much I admire her.So this stay was a very historic stay. Nothing makes a weekend getaway better than delving right into history.

We were very lucky to see both a European-style view room (for those that are looking for something more affordable) and one of the premium suites, called the Historic Collection where we stayed for the night. Each of the 92 guest rooms are uniquely designed to give a  special characteristic to every guest's stay. There are many things that define The Walper Hotel and make it unique. I loved the oak hardwood floor which you do not see very often in hotels, and also the colourful headboard found in each guest room which is different from room to room. It was also wonderful to hear that The Walper Hotel supports local businesses and that the guest rooms’ headboards and side tables were made by Artco of St. Jacobs.Other local amenities found in the hotel include Smile Tiger Coffee delivered to your room each afternoon, bathrobes from Pamuk & Co., and beautifully scented handsoap from Buck Naked Co.

Up next, TWH Social. Love how this spot is both a  restaurant and bar below street level. We actually saw a group of girls celebrating a  bachelorette party so this place is not only a popular downtown spot but definitely also the place to be for celebrations and rightly so.The food was phenomenal. So many amazing menu choices. To start off we had the grilled calamari puttanesca and warm goats cheese dip (sooo good, probably best cheese dip I ever). I am drooling as I am thinking about it  again. Meryem had the shrimp ans scallop spaghetti and I went for the classic Social Steak Frites steak. We also tried their brunch and it was just as delicious. Meryem's Belgian waffles were delicious and my avocado on toast was on point and the perfect healthy choice to start off the day.

I have stayed at Boutique Hotels a couple of times and even though their starting price point is a little more than your typical hotel, to me it is totally worth it. What I truly love about them is that you receive a more defined experience.Did you know that boutique hotels also offer a complimentary car to take you around the city? The Walper Hotel also offers this service. All you have to do is let the front desk know and the car will be arranged for you.How cool is that? No worries about hailing a cab or using your car to drive around the city.

The only thing we did not like about The Walper Hotel is how short our stay was. Meryem and I wish we could stayed much longer on our mini girls' escape from the city, but of course Monday morning we both had to get back to work. Despite the fall like weather, we had such a fun weekend at The Walper Hotel. A lazy morning in bed, a trip to the farmlands of St. Jacobs, delicious dinner and cocktails at TWH Social, and lots of chit chat.
